I am home from work today and decided to check the
tv rating for David's special. It was 67th!
I really thought it would do a lot better. I don't
think that system of rating is fair - for anyone
actually.
Maybe,just a guess,it was because the illusions
were not totally new that people did not tune in.??
I DID watch and learned a few things that I was
unaware of before.

I think that in the past 4-5 years that there have been so many magic specials that alot of people(not me) are tired of them. Plus it being a repeat of what alot of people have already seen DC do, I think that had something to do with it. I also don't think it had alot of publicity. Don't get me wrong, I am not putting DC down or anything(I am a huge fan of his) this is just what I think. The special this Fall will I'm sure do alot better because it will be new.

Disclaimer:The following reply mentions the magicians listed in the subject line in a "not so favorable" light. Let it be known that I don't personally have a problem with said magicians, but believe that certain information about them is pertinent in this discussion.

The "Escapes" special was sort of a teaser...A way to get David in your head, and get you fired up for "The Disappearance" this fall.Yes, David has been quiet on the TV since '95. "Escapes" was sort of a reminder to some people that David is still around...A reminder that in the middle of all these sad @$$ magic specials lately, is the guy who did it first. The one who continues to take magic to the next level. To David it's not about banging out specials...It's about being the best. David didn't expect amazing ratings. He just figured the general public needed a little kick to get them ready for the main event this fall.

Like David said, Once you've made everything big disappear and walked through all the impenetrable objects...The hard part is taking magic in a new direction. David has taken magic to the next level time after time. He made the Statue of Liberty disappear in 1983. And a seven ton jet in 1981...So what if many many years later, Franz made the Space Shuttle disappear, and Lance made a Stealth Bomber disappear... It's too late. David's been there and done it.
I dunno about you, but if I have to watch one more of these vampire magicians make a helicopter appear on stage, I'll puke. Hi Kirby! Hi Hans! ETC. ROFL! Can you say "Ferrari in 1980" ?

All kidding aside, "The Disappearance" this fall isn't about making something big disappear or appear on stage...This is world-wide! It's about David being the first to take magic in a new direction...To the next level...Setting the standard that will be followed by everyone else.

=)Kev

P.S. Okay, the vampire comment was on the edge...But c'mon...I think a couple of them might be. ;-)
I actually think Lance is a nice guy. ;-)

Just a note... David wasn't the one who "did it first" when it comes to TV specials. Mark Wilson was the first magic name associated with ongoing TV specials. He was followed by Doug Henning, who paved the way for David. And Doug still has one up on Dave... his first few specials were broadcast live from beginning to end. Doug had big, brass ones. No doubt about it.

I wasn't dissin' Doug a bit. I agree...When you think of great magicians, you think of the late Doug Henning. If you weren't watching David back then, you were watching Doug. I didn't mean for my reply to imply that David did TV first...What he did do first, was take TV to the next level. He did the grand illusions that everyone else copies, first! He made the Statue of Liberty disappear, on TV... But now, everyone can make a tank, elephant, bomber, space shuttle, helecopter etc disappear.WOW! They can even move a hunk of land to the middle of the ocean. No way? Yes way! ROFL
David walks through the Great Wall of China,on TV...The masked magician pushes an egg into a wall and makes it reappear on the other side in tact. Holy ****! Hold on a sec! I gotta call the family in to see the slo-mo replay on that!
See what I'm getting at? It's very special that Mark and Doug got their stage shows on TV first. They opened a lot of eyes to magic. As for rolling tape start to finish, that was what Doug wanted to do to bring everyone in, and say well, if I flub this or that, laugh with me. David figures that the other 500 times a year he rolls it live, is enough. David just said, let's do TV better and bigger. Is David a perfectionist? Yer gawdam right he is! After David's first special aired, it marked the beginning of all other magicians following him...Watching him pull away...Wondering what David Copperfield's next move will be.

"The Disappearance" is what's next.

I bet some vampire is gonna try to beat him to the punch by teleporting someone accross the Grand Canyon or something.Wait a minute, I was slow with the stake...It's been done. (How was that freak able to afford the cost of two helecopter tours accross the Grand Canyon anyway?)
That, teleporting someone accross the Grand Canyon thing smells like 1984 when a Master Illusionist first challenged the Grand Canyon. It's a double whammy follow-the-leader on that one!

And yes, I made up the word "teleporting" like David made up "illusionary" I'll be seeing David in August, and we'll talk and laugh about how he only *taught* one three hour class in college, and I only *took* one class in college.
Must be like acid in your mouth about now.
ROFLMAO!
BTW...You still working on that forklift levitation for your show?
DUDE! I'm only Kidding! everyone knows that only a washed-up-has-been-dove-pullin'-robot-lookin'-sounds like be my Valentine magician from Vegas does levitation with a forklift!

Take it easy Travis,
=)Kev
