I just got around to watching David Copperfield: The Great Escapes.
Not too impressed.
The commentary was just... blah. Quite frankly, David's bad grammar was starting to annoy me. He kept saying "illusionary". The correct word is "illusory" or even "illusive". "Illusionary" is not a word.
Come on, if you're going to write a show or deliver pseudo-candid commentary on television, at least run a spell check or look up any questionable words in the dictionary.
The look of the show was almost certainly influenced by Blaine's specials and the work done on them by Spike Lee. The whole thing was clearly going for an MTV kind of look and feel.
Overall, not a very memorable show.

What's the big deal about his grammar? He's an illusionist not an English proffesor, even though he does have pert' near impeccable grammer. :) I'm just surprised he didn't go back and edit out that one glitch that gave away a huge part of one of the secrets. (of course, if you don't already know what I'm talking about I'm not going to tell you.) -Kenn

When you're a Christian illusionist
the difference between possible and impossible
takes on a double meaning.

An image "Renoval" is something you have to "doe" constantly. The "MTV" image as you call it, wasn´t MTV. Was DC with other look. A refreshed and new look, not MR. Cool everytime. Influenced by David Blaine? Could be. But you don´t want to copy a "rival" if you want to name it as that. David is above many magicians, I would say including Blaine and that is not a reason to copy someone in your same job...

Travis will never stop criticizing David. I understand this, because I used to be critisized EVERY day when I was younger, but the people who were doing it were those who were jealous of me, and who wanted me to look bad so that they might look good. I feel sorry for those people who felt so bad about themselves, and for Travis, who is OBVIOUSLY very jealous of David. But please my friends, don't let Travis concern you any more, he has a right to his opinions, and they are just that His Opinions, no one elses. Most of us on this board loved the TV special, and we know how awesome it was!! And no matter what Travis says , posts here, we will be lifelong admirers of David, much to Travis disappointment. Be well...

*Sigh*

Here we go.
Angela, scroll down and read what I had to say about David advancing the art of magic.
There WERE things I liked about the show, but I'm not going to sit here and list all of that stuff. You guys do nothing but repeat over and over the things you love about David, so there's no need for me to rehash any of it.
Cloud's post was a shining example of the typical mindset on this board. Instead of being able to look at Dave's show with a discerning, critical eye and be willing to say, "Hey, there's a mistake", she'd rather say the mistake is "creative" and credit David with furthering the English language.
Please. We could all sit around and make up new words all day long. It's not hard and it's not creative. It's a mistake, and a careless one at that. Plain and simple. Why is that so hard for anyone here to accept?

I think 'illusionary' is a real word but you have to hand it to David's intelligence and
magical skills if he can create
and make a brand new word 'appear' in the English language and have real people
actually understand what he means when he uses it..
What things do you like about David and his skills Travis? You said before that you admire him
but you seem to be always criticizing him.

Come on... that is a TERRIBLE justification for using improper Enlglish. To say that David deserves credit for inventing a new word that people understand... what?? Of course they understand what he means. He's talking about illusions, using a word (albeit an incorrect one) that has "illusion" in it. That would be like me saying, "This song employs a lot of musiconimous techniques". People would know I was referring to musical technique, but that still wouldn't make it correct.

As for things I like about David and his work, I'm not going to take the time to list everything I can think of here. Suffice to say that my art would not be where it is today without the work he's done.
David is a great asset to magic and, ultimately, he has done nothing but further it. I'd say he's helped it go two steps forward, one step back. Overall, he's moved it forward.

"WRONG TRAVIS: ILLUSIONARY IS IN MY DICTIONARY" , posted Tue 9 May 20:47user profileedit/delete messagepost reply

In my rather large copy of 'The Tormont Webster's Illustrated Encyclopedia Dictionary,' page 840.
the word 'illusionary' is listed as an adjective of the word illusion.
You really should research these things
before you stake an argument on them and thereby, your credibility and intelligence on them.
That way you won't end up looking so wrong and uninformed. Also Travis, new words are
being invented all the time. Where do you think all those words came from originally?
Someone invented them.

As I pointed out above, I stand corrected and have absolutely no problem saying so.
Thanks for the info.

I'd be curious, though, to know if the word is archaic.

Travis
I have a question for you. Why are your postings
always saying something negative. You are one
of the very few who did not like the special.
I did like it. There are several things that
he revealed to all of us in the commentary, that
I did not know. Glad I do now.

i think the MTTV look in the specail comontaries was a VERY good thing!! David has been away from telivision for a long time. He neeeds to appeal to a NEW audience of the next generation now. I noticed that some of his 80's songs he used originally were relpced with new up-to-date-new-milenium type music. I think this is great. I LOVE David snew stle of thigs. This modern, down to earth, new age feel is great for David! he needs to keep up with the changing times just as any other star does.

Actually, I did like the attempts at an MTV kind of look and feel, but they came off like exactly that... attempts.
As for the "behind-the-scenes" info, so much of it was bogus that it just didn't interest me.

The image shift is good. I think it is FAR better than David's old image. So much better than trying to be Mr. Cool all the time.

As for the bad grammar... well, it's just a fact.

I just thought that I would point out that while Webster might not consider the word "illusionary" a "real" word. It has been used before many times before Copperfield used it on his special.
I'm currently redesigning the doughenning.com site and just the other day I was watching one of Doug Henning's old TV specials and he used the term "illusionary". So I guess you could say this word could be considered a slang word...

Pronunciation: (slang), [key]
—n.
1. very informal usage in vocabulary and idiom that is characteristically more metaphorical, playful, elliptical, vivid, and ephemeral than ordinary language, as Hit the road.
2. (in English and some other languages) speech and writing characterized by the use of vulgar and socially taboo vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.
3. the jargon of a particular class, profession, etc.
4. the special vocabulary of thieves, vagabonds, etc.; argot

Sorry.
That hardly qualifies it as a slang word. Slang words are words that have come into common usage.
It was incorrect when Doug used it and it's incorrect now. I have a feeling Davey heard it used by some others and began using it himself.
