Hi Senefra,
I donīt mind discussing DC Music at all, so off course I can share my view with you!
First off, DC is using an instrumental version! (Which actually NEVER has been released by Prodigy, so itīs impossible for us "collector" to buy it;-)
Anyways, by using an instrumental version, it really shouldīt matter what the name of the...father(figure), I mean song is!
On the other hand, if the lyrics was included, and we had to listen to the lyrics "Smack My Bi*th Up" while looking at his Squeese Box Illusion, I would have to agree with you. It wouldnīt fit the right mood at all.
However, like itīs edited instrumentally, I love it! - And Iīm not usually a fan of much of the songs in this genre, but off course Iīm formilliar with the famous Prodigy, and this it their best song in my opinion, and Iīm sure many people agrees with me, because they recoinize it!
And thatīs my second view why I like his choise. There are surely many songs that sounds closely the same style as this one.
Like for example Cyrstal Methodīs "Busy Child" (Intern Joke - LOL;-)
But itīs a good thing using songs that are so recoinizable that people in the audience feel like "this song Iīve heard before"
The same goes with Classical Music. You can often listen to a melody from Mozart or Beethoven etc. and really donīt care if Classical experts thinks itīs a masterpiece as long as you havenīt heard it before. Itīs difficult to love listening to a strange melody just like that.
But as soon as youīll hear a Classical Theme you know you have heard many times before in you lifetime, you recoinize it and say to yourself: "Yeah, thatīs "one of the good ones"...
You still may know nothing about good Classical music, and probable only have heard the 5-10 best songs from the 5-10 best Composers ever!!!
You follow me here or what?
You may say "Breathe" is also a very known Prodigy song that people have heard of, but besides perhaps Firestarter, Prodigy songs or songs by other bands in that genre isnīt that known to the average audience.
But still, Smack my ***** up is in my opinion one of the most recoinized, and definetly cool stuff for this particular Illusion.
As for song titles, David has pretty much always picked out perfect song titles. Song from Aliens, Explorers, Coocoon, etc. (All James Horner - LOL) has even suitable song names even though there are instrumental song, and Iīm probable one of the "few ones" in the entire world who cared about those connectons.
For example using the Instrumental version of "Letīs hear it for the boy" is a perfect typical DC Music exampel, when Matthew (Matt:-)is getting his applause from the audience.
Many people donīt get this connections, but those whoīs formilliar with the song, getīs it and say to themselves: A-ha, or whatever. (David has not used the song "Take on Me...yet though;-)
So we all could ask ourselves though: What about that Prodigy song. Is that a hint to us? - A hidden insult to female audience? - Hey, I serioulsly donīt think so! - But sure, heīs aware of the original name of the song heīs using.
But please, is there a big deal when the lyric isnīt even used?
As for soundtracks, itīs true David has used alot of music from the world of Film And Television. So "Go" and "Price of Tides" ARE IN GOOD COMPANY!!! - Off course, the song Magic Capret Ride only counts for 1 single film though. I know of several films that has used that particular song!!! - LOL -
I did actually make a "very fast count" in my head a couple of minutes ago, and remembered about "80-something", different movies or televsion shows ("DC TV Specials" NOT Included - LOL - ...but "batteries...;-) etc. from "DC Music".
Iīm sure I know about more when I "think" (Blues Brothers:-) more specific about it.
"Nice" to see you like Peter Gabriel good enough. (Remember that the Passion album is the actual "Soundtrack" for "The Last Temptation Of Christ":-) And if Phil Collins is the Ace in the Card-Deck of DC Music, thereīs no doubt that Gabriel is the King!
Seriously, heīs the King!
Hard to say who the Queen is though? Of all the female DC artists, they all have only 1 DC song each. Even Cindy Williams sings only one time, but atleast Bernadette Peters sing twice.
And I shouldnīt forget Sherine from Big Pig, who has main vocal at "I canīt break away", and share the vocals on "Nation" (Sherine is the Queen of DC Music:-) - Or that the song "Itīs a kind of Magic" counts??? - LOL -
The Jack of DC Music should be an aritst named Jack, but there isnīt any in DC Music. Off course, the closest is Michael "Jack"...son, which has Jam, Thriller and even used O Fortuna himself!
However, alot of Several time used Film Composers begins his firstname with a "J" though...
Off course, James Horner is that Ace, John Williams is the King, and I guess Jerry Goldsmith have to be the Queen then?
(Well, I guess "Jack"...ie Wilson could be that Queen instead;-)
O.K. Iīll better stop now. "So far, So Good" (About Last Night Soundtrack:-)
I could risk ending up with the entire deck of cards here!
Wow, seriously, I just remembered "Risky Business" Soundtrack by just writing the word risk a few seconds ago. Man, thatīs scary! - Thatīs enough to remember that Phil Collins` "In the Air Tonight" is ALSO music from a movie. I seriously did thought about that one when I fastly counted a few minutes ago.
Like a said, thereīs probable even close to 100 soundtracks/tv-series/show David has used music from.
To end this "fable" (peter pan musical:-) with your two mentioned scores.
You "Go" on, Dave - In use of music connected to movies, youīre the Prince of T...(hat)? - But youīll know...
- IīM THE KING OF REMEMBERING THEM!!! -

I'm sure David doesn't mean to offend anybody when he selects the songs that are used in his illusions. It's more of what music has the right beat, creates the right feelings, etc. I'm sure he didn't start of thinking, "Hmm...I like the phrase 'Smack That B**** Up', let me find a song with that title and choreograph an illusion around it!"
Usually, it starts out with David having an idea for an illusion, then he searches for a piece of music that fits the setting, mood, and pace. And sometimes the right music may have a title that is sensitive to some people, but you just can't please all of the people all of the time :)
So to answer your question - do we really need to hear Prodigy's 'Smack My B***** Up'? Yes, for that particular illusion, we probably really need to. Do we really need to know the title of the song? No.
Just my 2 cents. Ok...I better stop before this becomes an Endre-length post :)
